UNWGEID Remembers Patricio Rice
The United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) remembers Patricio Rice
GENEVA (12 July 2010) – The United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances is saddened by the untimely passing of Patricio Rice, Coordinator of ICAED (International Coalition against Enforced Disappearances), and co-founder and former Executive Secretary of FEDEFAM (Latin American Federation of Associations of Families of Disappeared Detainees), on Thursday 8 July 2010. Patricio passed away on his way home from various conferences and meetings on disappearances, including a meeting with the Chair-Rapporteur of the WGEID, where they discussed events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the WGEID.
Patricio Rice, himself a survivor of enforced disappearance in Argentina, dedicated his life to the fight against disappearances. He played a crucial role in the development and adoption of the Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances, which should come into force very soon as a result of his tireless work. Earlier this year, the WGEID published on its website "a special story" on the occasion of its 30th anniversary which features also Patricio’s experience (http://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/disappearancesstillamajorhrchallenge.aspx).
The members of the WGEID recall that: “Patricio symbolized the ongoing quest to eradicate enforced disappearances around the world. He was one of the pioneering individuals who helped put in place a system to deal with this phenomenon. He continually strived, at great personal cost, to improve that system. He will be sorely missed both professionally and personally.”
The Working Group sends its sincerest condolences to Patricio’s wife and children, as well as his friends and colleagues.
(*) The Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances is comprised of five independent experts from all regions of the world. The Chair-Rapporteur is Mr. Jeremy Sarkin (South Africa), and the other Expert-Members are Mr. Santiago Corcuera (Mexico), Ms. Jasminka Dzumhur (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Mr. Olivier de Frouville (France) and Mr. Osman El-Hajjé (Lebanon)
