Dear Wilson and Eko
Our solidarity with you during the holding of the Congress of the Indonesian Association of Families of the Disappeared IKOHI.
We know about the human rights abuses amounting to genocide perpetrated by the Indonesian armed forces ABBRI/TNI mainly under the Suharto rule but also after him. We know this included abuses in Indonesia including Jakarta, Makassar and Acheh by uniformed and non uniformed mainly army personnel and their armed thugs or militias, as we have been watching the same thing happening for a long time in East Timor 1975-99, and West Papua 1961 - now.
In East Timor now as a culture of fear of offending Indonesia exists in the leadership, we hear excuses for not pursuing justice. This provides IMPUNITY not only to the Indonesian military human rights abusers, but it strengthens the global campaigns of those who seek impunity for crimes they continue to commit, this including the USA very much at present.
In East Timor after nearly 4 years of work a comprehensive report CAVR details many of these abuses and crimes. This process and report allows a first step towards justice for victims of those murdered or simply disappeared. Finality can only come after adequate prosecutions and sentencing of perpetrators, and the passing of time.
Maybe a first step is to call for a CAVR like process in Indonesia. We also recognise Munir, and demand from your President SBY that he have the courage to deny impunity to all of his killers.
We extend solidarity to all of you involved with the IKOHI congress, and hope that much good will come from this.
Your sincerely
