Dear IKOHI
Lawyers for Forests, Inc, (LFF) is a not-for-profit association of legal professionals that promotes the conservation and better management of Australia's remaining native forests. LFF encourages its members to become more environmentally aware and encourages law firms to become more environmentally friendly, for example, by avoiding paper and pulp products from unsustainable sources in favour of recycled or environmentally sensitive alternatives.
Through analysis of the laws and regulatory framework applicable to the native forests sector and by advocating law reform, LFF is also working to promote better native forest law and policy.
LFF also provides a referral service for individuals charged with criminal offences under forest legislation and for environmental groups seeking legal advice.
We realise that those in Indonesia doing similar work to us are unfortunately exposed to great danger, including threats to their physical safety. In Australia we are lucky in that we can campaign openly on political and environmental issues generally without fear of physical attack. In Indonesian such activism can lead to persons being beaten, jailed, or even "disappeared" which as we all know, usually means killed.
The work you do is vital in ensuring that human rights violations are not forgotten and that those people who have been "disappeared" by the TNI, police, Kopassus, the government and others are also not forgotten.
As you may know, the Australian government has recently renewed training exercises with Kopassus. This is unfortunate but hopefully respect for human rights will eventually infiltrate into that notorious organisation.
LFF sends its strongest encouragement to you for a successful 2nd Congress.
Kind regards
Glenn Osboldstone
Vice-President,
